Our Sr Denise passed away early Sunday morning, one week short of her 94th birthday.
We believe that each person comes into being from the imagination of God, made by his hand and enlivened by his breath. Each of us is a unique and unrepeatable work of God’s genius. Perhaps it may be said, though, that among all God’s unique and unrepeatable creatures, some are more unique and unrepeatable than others. Sr Denise was one such work of genius.
A freckled red head with a gift for art and music.
A reader of books and of people, with a capacity for intense observation often accompanied by incisive commentary.
A woman drawn to the depths of God and self in solitude, silence, and prayer.
A heart made spacious by suffering, fired by determination, and sparkling with eccentricity.
Most notable in her later years was her charitable cheerfulness in the midst of many struggles, and a disarming capacity for silliness.
Sr Denise, at the end of a life spent walking, often in darkness, toward a face not seen but longed for, now dwells quietly under the gaze of One who sees her and smiles. May she smile on us her knowing smile, and pray for us as we follow in her footsteps.
